When you are feeling down about life, God has a way of reminding you to count your blessings instead of complaining. Over the weekend, I was stressing about something at work, and I was allowed to meet someone special. Upon meeting him, I had no idea what I was about to encounter. We often underestimate the encounters we have with strangers. But after this experience, I will never do that again. I overheard him having a conversation about losing loved ones on the phone. During the conversation, I heard him say that they had numerous funerals during the week. I immediately suspected it was about the Surfside collapse, but I waited until he got off the phone to verify. I asked him about it after he hung up the phone, and with tears in his eyes, he told me that 2 of his family members did not survive. I began to get emotional. I told him I couldn't imagine the pain he was feeling". As I took him to help his grieving mom, With tears in my eyes, I continued to speak with him about his family, and he notified me that he lost ten family members in the disaster overall.

As he sat in the backseat of my car, I struggled to take in what I was hearing. I started to cry uncontrollably about his situation. But to my surprise, he started encouraging and consoling me during the trip. He started sharing wisdom about life while we both were crying. He told me that his faith is what's keeping him strong during this storm. His wise words continued to empower over the duration of the trip. After I dropped him off to his condo. We ended up sharing a warm embrace. When I pulled off to leave, I reflected on problems in my life. I noticed that they became smaller and smaller during the trip. But I have to admit, there was a hint of survivor's remorse that bothered me to a certain degree. It was hard for me to celebrate life, when I found out someone experienced so much death. But As bad as I felt, His words of wisdom helped me focus on the quality of life. He told me to focus on creating a legacy that's worth remembering. He told me to do good deeds without expecting anything in return". He told me to love and appreciate the people in my life.

As I reflected, it finally hit me that a man who was suffering the absolute worst dug deep to give me the best advice ever. I realized that a man with a broken heart helped to keep mine from breaking. I realized that a man that was hurting helped me heal. I saw all of the characteristics of Jesus Christ in this man. He suffered the unthinkable to give people an opportunity to be free from sin. Even while Jesus suffered, he helpeda sinner win. I left this man being intentional about being a better version of me. I became intentional about stressing less and laughing more. I became intentional about hating less and loving more. I wanted to focus on the better things in life. I wanted to pursue the free things that make me happy. Forgiveness suddenly became easy. I searched for reasons to be inspired. I searched for opportunities to help put a smile on someone's face. When you meet someone that's going through more than you are, You don't compare your storm to theirs. You do what Jesus did when he saw someone suffering. He searched for opportunities to uplift people internally. He showed us true love to inspire us to live it, & he showed us all forgiveness to motivate us to give it.
